Slide

The upper portion of a semi-automatic pistol that moves backward (recoils) and forward during the firing cycle. It houses the barrel, firing pin/striker, extractor, and usually the sights. The mass of the slide, combined with the recoil spring, safely delays the opening of the breech until chamber pressure drops to safe levels after firing.
